Ian Wright was disappointed with one Arsenal star after the loss to Newcastle
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has expressed his displeasure with Mikel Merino’s performance in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, saying the Spaniard “wasn’t tight enough in midfield and around the pitch”.
Newcastle’s victory was finally sealed with Alexander Isak’s powerful header in the 14th minute of the first half and Arsenal held on for a draw.
Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City also lost to Bournemouth on the same day, but the absence of injured captain Martin Odegaard had a huge impact on the Gunners.
The creative gap in Arsenal’s midfield is becoming more and more apparent and manager Mikel Arteta hopes Odegaard can return for next weekend’s London derby with Chelsea.
Merino, who joined Arsenal for £32m from Real Sociedad in the summer, struggled to make an impact, particularly in the final third of the pitch, and was replaced by youngster Ethan Nwaneri with 30 minutes remaining.
Wright stressed that Merino is “still up to speed” on fitness and the demands of the Premier League.
“Listen, Odegaard has been around for a while.” Wright explained. “Talking about the manager: Fabio Vieira, we haven’t seen much of him either and he has to fit the mold.”
Emil Smith Rowe has moved to Fulham and we have youngster Ethan Nwaneri who can play. A high pressure condition occurs. But now, after 10 games, we must not lose patience and put pressure on them.”
Wright believes Arsenal fans should take note of Odegaard’s absence when analysing past games. He added:
“It’s frustrating to feel like that even after playing 10 games.” “A shot on goal against Bournemouth, a shot on goal today is not enough for a title-chasing team. — We can’t say we miss Odegaard.
In his post-match press conference, Arteta acknowledged Odegaard’s absence
“I haven’t seen him for six weeks, but there are other options that could be effective,” Arteta said. “Today we have to look at ourselves, commend Newcastle and move forward.”
