Jamie Carragher has revealed that Manchester City want the Arsenal star sidelined to boost their chances in the Premier League title race.
With Guardiola’s most important player (Rodri) out for the season, the attention for the title favorites has shifted to Arsenal.
Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show, Carragher was asked which Arsenal player City would want removed from the title picture.
Carragher said:
“Saliba”. “I don’t think they’ve got much backup at centre-back, really. If [Declan] Rice went out, they’ve got [Thomas] Partey, they’ve got Jorginho. At centre-back, who would you bring in? Left-footed options like [Riccardo] Calafiori and [Jakub] Kiwior. I think Saliba, definitely.”
William Saliba has cemented his reputation as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League by forming a powerful partnership with Gabriel at the heart of Arsenal’s defence.
His absence was keenly felt last season as City wrested the trophy from title-chasing Arsenal after the France international missed the last 11 games with a back injury.
Saliba himself believes his injury was crucial to Arsenal missing out on the title in the 2022-23 season.
“It is clear that Arsenal can become champions with me. But injuries are part of football.”
Saliba’s importance to Arsenal has also been praised by new midfielder Declan Rice, who recently spoke of the impact the 23-year-old and his defender have had on the team’s success.
