Gauff defeats Swiatek in straight sets to reach semifinals of WTA Finals
Coco Gauff advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals with the second win of her career, defeating Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday.
This was Gauff’s first win against Swiatek since the 2023 Cincinnati Open. The result ended Swiatek’s six-game winning streak in the finals.
With the win, Gauff moves to 2-0 in the Orange and drops Swiatek to 1-1. Swiatek defeated Barbora Krejcikova in three sets on Sunday in her first match in two months.
Wimbledon champion Krejcikova maintained her lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jessica Pegula. As a result, Pegula, who lost in straight sets to Gauff in her first match in Saudi Arabia, was eliminated.
Krejcikova was the last player in the tournament to qualify for the annual top eight tournament. She became the lowest ranked player in a WTA final since Magda Maleeva 22 years ago.
